My 15 year old daughter has a cell phone and has started to receive calls from a number with which she is unfamiliar. As a parent, this is incredibly troubling. This only came up when she asked me the other day, “Dad, can I locate someone by mobile phone?”
I was not immediately aware what she was after but once I asked a few questions it became obvious that somehow her cell phone number had either sprung up on some list somewhere, someone was repeatedly calling a wrong number, or someone was intentionally trying to bother my daughter.
I was very concerned that it was that last option. The first few times the mobile number popped up on her phone, she answered it unknowingly and the person hung up on her.
Parents have a big job watching out for their kids today. Access to mobile phones, the internet, and electronic hand held devices that allow chat and email just provide too many ways for strangers to reach our kids if we are not diligent about checking the activities on those devices.
Fortunately, you can locate someone by mobile phone. Free directories claim to offer such services but as mobile phone number information is not publicly available, only the best directories can provide accurate information and these often require a fee. For peace of mind and to stay on top of who is calling you, it might be well worth the price.
These directories of mobile phone information get their data from the cell phone providers and companies who have the most accurate information. When it’s important that you locate someone by mobile phone, this is the only way to go.
Some services, like Reverse Phone Detective, also allow you to file a complaint against the mobile phone number you are researching. This is just one more effective way parents can put a stop to harassing calls.
In my daughter’s situation, we were lucky. A mobile phone lookup showed that it was a sales team that was calling my daughter using some sort of automated routing system to mobile phones. This was why the caller seemed to be hanging up. One call to the company and they were able to find and remove her number from their system.
The alternative would have been to change my daughter’s cell phone number – an option to which I was certainly not opposed in order to keep her safe but because I could locate someone by their mobile number, I was able to prevent having to go through the headache of a number change.
I also feel a huge weight lifted from my shoulders knowing my daughter is not being stalked or hounded by an anonymous caller.
